Thumbnail Watch goes where no watch has gone before

Thumbnail - ZerOne Magazine If you’ve seen the last Die Hard movie, the villain has one of the best quotes ever when it comes to technology. He tells John McClane that “he (John) is a Timex watch in a digital world.” In all honesty, I’m not certain that anyone is using watches, digital or analog, in today’s society. I stopped wearing one long ago when I got my cellular phone.

It appears that Timex is completely reinventing the watch with the Thumbnail watch. The company had a design contest to come up with a new design for the watch, and this is one of the better entries.

I have heard that the Thumbnail watch is designed to slip over your thumb, so I’m guessing that no Lee Press-on nail action is required. The time glows on your thumbnail, and it can light up and change modes just by pressing the end of the thumbnail.

I can’t quite figure out what type of technology is used to make this device work. If this is some new sort of LCD, then why not apply it to all the nails. Can you imagine having a computer interface like this on all on your nails?

Maybe your cell phone could be on your pinky, so you can take calls by making the “phone” sign on your hand. The iPod on your ring finger, and a ring could be the speaker. Your middle finger could be a Blackberry, but just be careful not to flip people off when checking your e-mail. The pointer finger could serve as a digital camera, and all you would need to do is point and shoot.

We’d better see where the Thumbnail watch goes before we speculate on the other fingers.

MobiFrance Concept Phone, the Perfect French Gift on July 14th

MobiFrance celebrated the French Independence Day on July 14th by showing the world a neat concept phone shaped like the Eiffel Tower. The concept bears the name of FL (French Luxury) and it’s a touchscreen handset with a 7.2 megapixel camera.

MobiFrance Concept Phone - ZerOne Magazine
If you hold the phone vertically it looks just like the famous French monument, the Eiffel Tower and you’ll also notice that it features speakers on its sides. The FL supports multimedia playback, features a vibration mode and that neat touchscreen is an OLED display. No news about the price of this beauty, but it’s pretty interesting to see the Sony Ericsson branding on it.

Opera press release:
As you can imagine, we encountered a few bugs last week that we needed to fix before we launch. Our engineering team worked through the weekend to fix the bugs. The fixes are almost complete now, but we need two more days to run the build through our quality assurance testing. The new launch date is now set for the 17th.

Casio EX-Z150; world’s slimmest digital camera with wide-angle zoom lens

Casio has added a new ultra-thin point-and-shoot in their Exilim lineup, the EX-Z150. Measuring a mere 20.1 mm in thickness, Casio said that the EX-Z150 is the world’s slimmest digital camera touting a wide-angle 28 mm 4x optical zoom lens.

But that is not to say that the EX-Z150 falls short in terms of features. On the contrary, this snapper is loaded with high-end features such as an 8.1 megapixel CCD resolution, CCD-shift anti-shake function, face detection technology, 3-inch high resolution LCD monitor, support for various media card formats including SD/SDHC, MultiMediaCard, Multi MediaCard plus, video recording in AVI and MPEG formats, 64-1600 ISO sensitivity and its Li-ion battery can take up to 280 still images per full charging time.

This new Exilim is available in silver, black, red, pink and green colors.

“Hole” Concept Phone Designed for Orange is a Winner

This interesting design won the annual D&AD Student Awards and the concept handset belongs to Chi Shing Lo, one of the talented students at the De Montfort University. The “Hole” phone features (predictably enough) a hole, that can be used for charging purposes (inductive), as a data transfer port and last but not least as a camera view finder.
Hole Phone orange - ZerOne Magazine
The above-mentioned hole is surrounded by a mirrored surface, so it’ll allow the user to take his/her own picture, for the usual narcissistic fun. Hmmm, how about using that hole as magnifying glass with the aid of a lens or as a wrench if your imagination is wild enough.

Oh and by the way, the handset was designed for Orange so that’s a semi-promise that it’ll become real one day.

Basic Tab Phone Design Challenges the iPhone

Basic Tab mobile phone - ZerOne Magazine
The Basic Tab mobile phone design manages to achieve a new interpretation of the whole “iPhone thing”, copied over and over again by big handset manufacturers. Its designer, Jaren Goh focused more on looks, than on futuristic specs and he did a splendid job, so we might as well call this a fashion device.
Basic Tab mobile phone - ZerOne Magazine
Just look at the wide black screen at the front of the Basic Tab phone, a tad more elegant than Apple’s approach. Notice that the display is placed on top of a metal part and it gets a bit of RAZR aggressiveness going on. In case you’re not convinced that this is really a fashion phone, you should check out the camera’s metallic tab at the back. Precious, just precious…
