Splashtop Linux variant to power up Asus notebooks

If you’re one of those PC users who always find yourself doing other things while waiting for your machines to completely boot up, either you’d be glad to hear about Splashtop or feel sad since you might end up not doing those other things anymore. But that is if you are using an Asus notebook as these machines will be getting the Splashtop Linux OS treatment.

If you would recall Splashtop has been pre-installed on some Asus motherboards not so long ago, and soon enough it will be powering some Asus notebook as a full-blown OS. If you think that the Splastop is just your ordinary Linux variant, think again. Well, that’s because Splashtop offers up a unique PC boot up experience. Soon, you can instantly fire up some application even if your machine has not completed its boot up sequence. What makes this possible is the fact that Splashtop will run out of your machine’s RAM. Hence, saving you some precious battery time.

In a nutshell, Splashtop offers a fast, secure and eco-friendly way of using your Asus machines. For those who are not using Asus notebook this might be a good reason to score one as soon as the Splashtop gets into these machines.

BenQ intro’s world’s slimmest 8-megapixel T850 camera

BenQ has just launched its latest digital camera offering, and boy can we just say that it sure is slim. In fact this ultra-compact camera, dubbed the T850 may just be the slimmest in the crowd so far at only 14.9mm thick. But no matter how much we convince you that this baby is as sleek as it can get, we know that you would rather know about its features and functionality. Luckily, the T850 delivers a nice little punch that might drive you to consider getting one as soon as it becomes available.
BenQ T850 - ZerOne Magazine
The T850 packs good features such as a high 1600 ISO sensitivity, 3x optical zoom, 3-inch TFT LCD, 8.0-megapixel CCD sensor and SD/SDHC media support. But aside from these features, what makes BenQ T850 stand out among the crop of digital cameras in its line is its touch screen feature which would allow you to access camera functions by finger tapping, encircling or swiping. And yes, for a digital camera which employs actual “swiping” gesture to view photos, the T850 hits one mark on this one.
All these nifty features add up to other equally good features of the camera which include, “smile catch” technology, auto face tracking, Z lighting, advanced photo art, scribble and scrawl and quick bar.
If only BenQ has already announced the T850’s pricing and availability details, we might already be saving up for it.

Via’s new OpenBook reference design

Via, the company that brought us the NanoBook, has a new reference design; a computer called the OpenBook. This design is changed from the previous iteration, modeled to compete with the Asus Eee PC which has launched since the original NanoBook was unveiled. The computer sports an 8.9-inch display, with a 1024 x 600 resolution, three USB ports, VGA out and two 2-megapixel cameras. Additionally, it can connect to the internet via HSDPA, WiMAX or EV-DO. For the small form factor, a colossal 2GB of RAM and a 2.5-inch hard drive is squeezed in. You can run Windows Vista, XP or any Linux distro as your operating system. The OpenBook is based on the C7-M ULV processor and the VIA VX800 chipset, and you can get around 3 hours of battery life; in optimal conditions. OpenBook - ZerOne Magazine

Via is putting the CAD files of the hardware up for download under a Creative Commons license, OEM manufacturers can have a go at making this the best they see fit.

Mozilla to release an RC2 before the final Firefox 3

We have seen numerous reports, those even coming directly from Mozilla about how we can expect the final release of Firefox 3 to land this June and up until now it looked like it was right on track. While we have not heard any news of a major delay with that expected date, the latest news may push it up just a little bit. Recently we had seen the reports that ten critical flaws had been found in Firefox 3 RC1.

Since then Mozilla had been working to decide whether to ship the final “consumer-ready” release and then fix the flaws with version 3.0.1 or just move onto a Release Candidate 2. Well it seems the decision has been made, because they have officially announced that we will indeed be getting an RC2 before the final.

Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA X1 gets more details

The buzz and hype over Sony Ericsson’s upcoming XPERIA X1 smartphone continues to build up as Sony Ericsson’s developer site posted an updated white paper about the mobile phone. The white paper is still a long read and might bore you to death so if you don’t have the time to check it out, the paper contained two bits of new and welcomed information.

Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA X1 - ZerOne Magazine
So now, aside from the details that we already know as well as some pre-order pricing from some wireless carriers, we were also able to learn that the XPERIA would have 256MB of SDRAM and a 1500mAh lithium polymer battery which can give out a good 10 hours of talk time via GSM or 6.5 hours via UMTS.

iDEN Motorola i890 CABO will be available in april.no word about the price and specifications

iDEN Motorola i890 CABO - ZerOne Magazine
Wow, never thought we'd see the day that an iDEN handset came along that lacked that distinct iDENness. Motorola will definitely set that marketplace on fire if this beautifully RAZR 2-esque thing actually proves to be real, check out the frickin external screen on this thing! Featuring a 3 megapixel camera, external touch screen -- we're not positive if this only refers to the controls pictured above -- Bluetooth, support for up to a 6 GB SD card, and have we mentioned how glorious the whole thing looks? Look for this to land Q4 this year, that is, if it ever gets out of Photoshop the design room. Color us pretty unsure until we hear more.

Concept Portable Device is A Watch, GPS, MP3 Player…

You know what this concept watch (hopefully phone too) reminds me of? The modu phone, that can use tons of jackets to be turned into upgraded devices. The “Lobster” device below can also have modules attached to it, offering it all the extra features that the basic package doesn’t include.

What’s neat is that the segments of the Lobster look like an arm band, even if you keep adding more, like the MP3, GPS, hard disk, camera or cardiometer accessories

Philips' 198 and 199: at least they've got games

Philips 199 - ZerOne Magazine
A far cry from the Samsung Souls and Nokia N96s of the world lie two unassuming new models from Philips. Wow crowds, they won't, but there's a certain elegancy to simplicity that's hard to ignore here. Both the 198 and 199 candybars share 128 x 128 color displays, a miniUSB port, 20 days' worth of standby time, a handful of games to pass the time, GPRS data, and that's about it; the 199 adds an FM radio for those times when the games get a little tiresome. The GSM 900 / 1800 radio isn't going to do much for you stateside, but both should be available in China, Russia, and parts of Europe shortly for 1,000 Czech koruna and 1,100 koruna respectively -- about $63 and $70.

HTC’s Advantage X7510 will not be headed to the US

HTC’s Advantage X7510 - ZerOne Magazine

While the Advantage X7510 from HTC is without a doubt a sleek looking device, its one that us here in the US will just have to continue to read about. It seems that the Qualcomm chipset that is used in the X7510 is not allowed to be sold in the US, which means that unless you want to spend a fortune by getting one imported yourself, its just not going to happen. We can only hope this will change in the future, but until then we are simply out of luck.

Mobile phone evolution; 1985 to present day

Here we have a great little YouTube video showing off just how far we have come in the world of mobile phones. Without having to watch the video, I am sure you already know just how much they have advanced, but its still an interesting watch as they point out some interesting tidbits and facts along the way. For example, did you know that the Motorola StarTAC in 1996 was not only the first to offer a clamshell design but the first to also include a vibrate feature or that the Nokia 3210 in 2000 was the first with both an internal antenna and also T9 predictive text.

You can also do like we did, and try to count the number of phones that were featured that you also owned, personally I gave up and lost count. Continue reading to check out the video for yourself.

Averatec rolls out all-in-one desktop PC

This one’s going to send a lot of Apple fanboys aflutter, saying “Copycat!” “Imitation!” and “Unoriginal!” But let’s face it, is it truly possible to create an all-in-one PC that doesn’t remind one of the Apple iMac? I mean, really? But before you answer that, let me just go ahead and list out this baby’s features, and hopefully shed some light on even just a few readers.

Averatec rolls out all-in-one desktop PC - ZerOne Magazine

This all-in-one single body PC is from Averatec, and it features no less than a full-size keyboard, mouse, and of course, that single black slab of metal and plastic that houses the CPU, monitor, and other computer innards. The screen is a 22-inch 1680x1050p WSXGA+ HD display that hides an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, a 320GB hard drive, 2GB DDR2 SDRAM (expandable to 4GB) and nVidia GeForce graphics behind it.

It has a built-in 1.3-megapixel camera, 4-in-1 card reader and DVD/CD writer for some multimedia good times. Windows Vista Home Premium is also preloaded with the thing, to further wash away beliefs that this is an iMac-clone.

Unfortunately, the price point couldn’t get any closer to the iMac, at $1,299. Watch out for it’s appearance in your favorite local/online stores next month.

Become a Text Message Shorthand Pro

Back when beepers ruled our world, our mobile vocabulary never developed much beyond 143 (I love you) and 1134209 (go to hell). But now that every phone on the market is SMS-capable and texting plans are dirt-cheap (about $5 per month), Americans are sending more than 28 billion texts per month. The need for instant, discreet communication has spawned a language of its own. Memorize the terms below and you’ll be able to have an entire conversation with minimal keystrokes—saving your time and your thumbs while possibly even earning you some cool points with your kids. But take caution not to overuse. You don’t want to be that parent who just, like, tries too hard, KWIM?

Choosing the Right iPod

iPod Shuffle
The iPod shuffle ($79) is the most basic model—it lacks even a screen, but it’s cute, with a tiny metallic body available in five colors. The controls are dead-simple to use, and the integrated clip grips onto your workout gear. If you don’t have much digital music (it holds about 240 songs on 1GB of memory), or you just want something inexpensive to keep you company on a run, this is the iPod for you.

iPod Nano
One step up is the iPod nano (from $149), which has a sharp 2-inch screen and measures an ultra-slim 2.8 x 2.1 x 0.3 inches—perfect for style mavens. It’s still primarily a music player, but it plays videos that look clear and smooth. You can browse by album cover via Apple’s highly touted Cover Flow. The 4GB and 8GB capacities are good for small but growing collections, or for people who want less bulk while commuting, exercising, or walking around. The roughly 24 hours of audio playback per charge is also a plus.

iPod Classic
Those who have enormous amounts of digital music and want to carry as much of it around with them as they can should consider the iPod classic (from $249), which has an 80GB or whopping 160GB hard drive inside. It looks a lot like the full-sized iPods of yore, but it’s slimmer (0.4 or 0.5 inches thick, depending on capacity) and has a brighter 2.5-inch screen for playing videos. The front face is also now a scratch-resistant anodized aluminum, and it comes in silver or black. Battery life is much improved over previous models for both audio and video, at about 30/5 hours (audio/video) for the 80GB model and 40/7 hours for the 160GB behemoth.

iPod Touch
The cream of this crop is the Wi-Fi-enabled iPod touch (from $299), which looks like a slimmer iPhone, minus the phone. The 3.5-inch glass touchscreen supports multi-touch gestures, so you can easily blow up photos and Web pages. Its 8GB or 16GB of flash memory may not be enough for serious video buffs, but this is one killer media player. Extras include widgets for the Safari browser, YouTube, and calendar, but it lacks the iPhone’s e-mail interface (at least, without hacking the device’s OS). One huge bonus: wireless downloads from the iTunes Music Store. Battery life isn’t bad, at 22 hours for audio and 5 hours for video (with Wi-Fi off).

What You Can Do With Wi-Fi In Your iPhone,iPod ?

iPhone - ZerOne Magazine
Wirelessly download music from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store; surf the Web; check e-mail; find locations using Google Maps.

What We Like
The iPod touch is the most feature-packed PMP on the market, and delivers a lot of what makes the iPhone so compelling. This Wi-Fi device deliciously recreates the desktop browsing experience with Safari, and the multi-touch display makes it easy and fun to zoom in on photos and Web pages, as well as scroll through photos and albums. We also dig the Weather and Stocks widgets.

We were able to read the latest headlines at CNN.com in just 15 seconds (the page loaded completely in just more than 40 seconds), wirelessly download Michael Cera and Ellen Page’s “Anyone Else But You” over the air in 31 seconds, and enjoy The Irate Gamer’s latest videogame rants on YouTube (albeit with some minor buffering).

With the January software upgrade ($19.99), the iPod touch got even better with rich HTML Mail and Google Maps, which uses Skyhook Wireless’ triangulation technology to pinpoint users’ current locations.

What We Don’t
No over-the-air video downloads or Flash support.

Verdict
The iPod touch makes the most of its Wi-Fi functionality, making it the crown jewel of wireless PMPs.

3M mini-projectors set to land in / with Samsung phones later this year

3M mini-projectors - ZerOne Magazine
3M has been touting its mini-projectors for some time now ,but it looks like they're now finally a bit closer to landing in an actual product, with Samsung reportedly set to begin offering them later this year. What's not clear, unfortunately, is whether the projectors will actually be built into the cellphones (and if so, which ones), or simply offered as an attachment of some sort, but either way you can apparently expect to pay between $200 and $400 for the chance to spread a bit of visual pollution

Asus Eee PC 4G Surf Revealed

Just a few months ago Asus rocked the ultraportable market with the release of the EEE PC 701. At the beyond-reasonable price of $399, the 701 came armed with a versatile Linux operating system and tons of handy applications. Asus Eee PC 4G - ZerOne Magazine

Asus P320 Windows Mobile PDA Phone - Page 2

Of course, the P320's Bluetooth connectivity means you needn't completely forget the idea of using the phone for serious work. One of Windows Mobile Professional's biggest selling points is that you can create, edit and save Microsoft Office documents, and with the right add-ons, this phone can still be a powerful tool - though you may get a crick in your neck peering at that tiny screen.

Asus P320 Windows Mobile PDA Phone - ZerOne Magazine

Elsewhere the P320 is not the most powerful device, however. It's a quad-band GSM phone, so it'll work pretty much anywhere you can get a mobile phone signal, but there's no HSDPA - just GPRS. It has just a 2-megapixel camera with no flash or self-portrait mirror too. And though Windows Mobile 6.1 helps it a little, the core components aren't the quickest: the OMAP850 200MHz processor chugs occasionally when launching applications, and the 64MB of RAM isn't the most generous in the world.

It's not as bad as it could be, though; help is at hand in the shape of a useful extra application called Auto Cleaner. This allows you to force Windows to remove applications from the memory when you press the X in the top right of the Window, instead of keeping everything minimised and slowing the phone to a crawl. Usefully, you can set some apps up to be exempted from this regime, so you can keep Windows Media player running, at all times if you want.

There are other notable features, too, some added by Asus, some courtesy of Windows Mobile 6.1. The latter is responsible for the Getting Started Centre, which provides handy shortcuts to important setup items such as email, date and time, and Bluetooth headset. There's threaded SMS, again; a new WMP 6.1 feature . Don't expect anything swanky like the iPhone's speech bubbles - all Windows Mobile does is group messages to and from specific recipients, a bit like Google Mail - but it is a useful addition. Google Calendar sync has also been preinstalled, as has Voice Commander (speech dialling and phone control software), and some handy additions to the device's phone functionality in the shape of a call filter and profile setup and selection tool.

Verdict

It all goes together to make a well-rounded smartphone that's just about the most pocketable Windows Mobile PDA phone you're likely to come across. Unfortunately, though, there's no getting around the fact that the P320's small screen makes using Windows Mobile Professional even more fiddly to use than it normally is. But if you don't mind getting the stylus out occasionally and want the push email and office document features of a Windows Mobile device without the bulk, it's a very solid option. And the inclusion of a GPS receiver in a device this small is just the icing on the cake.

Asus P320 Windows Mobile PDA Phone - Page 1

Design 7/10
Features 7/10
Performance 7/10
Value 7/10
Overall 7/10

While the rest of the mobile phone industry has been producing ever slimmer and sexier handsets, so-called 'smart' phones have struggled to keep up. Hampered by the need for usability (yes, I know it sounds silly), practicality and power - and the fact that Windows Mobile doesn't work that well on small screens - most smartphones have traditionally tended to be on the pocket-stretching side.

That is beginning to change, though. The Palm Centro recently demonstrated that you can fit a usable QWERTY keypad on a device that doesn't require a belt clip to carry it around, and I liked the Asus M930, a beautifully-designed clamshell phone based on Windows Mobile Standard, again with a full QWERTY keyboard, but still small and sexy.

But nothing I've yet seen quite beats Asus' latest, and most exciting, PDA-style handset for sheer pocketability. The Asus P320 measures a mere 100 x 55mm and is 13.4mm slim. It weighs just 105 grams, too, which makes it the smallest, lightest Windows Mobile Professional device I've ever come across. It's more compact even than the HTC Touch and Glofish X600 - even my small hands look gorilla-like in the presence of this dainty device. Amazingly, given such diminutive dimensions, the P320 also includes a GPS receiver, so you can add full in-car sat-nav via the microSD slot on the side if you want. There's also a Wi-Fi adaptor packed in somehow

Asus P320 Windows Mobile PDA Phone - ZerOne Magazine

Of course the tiny dimensions do have their drawbacks: you'll not be wanting to type out any seriously long emails using this phone - there's no sliding keyboard, no hardware number pad, and not even any enhancement to the useless on-screen Windows Mobile keyboard. And Windows Mobile's small check boxes and skinny scrollbars are even less usable on a 240 x 320 screen that measures just 2.65in diagonally.

But Asus has made an effort here to mitigate such restrictions. As well as including the latest version of Windows Mobile Professional - version 6.1 - the P320 is equipped with Asus' own Today Screen enhancements which, like the HTC version and SPB's excellent Mobile Shell software, include weather information, plus quick access to other commonly used functions. In this case, you get an attractive snapshot of calls missed, voice messages left, and email plus a scrolling ticker of either recent emails, text messages or RSS feed news stories - the latter supplied via the bundled Newstation RSS tool. Plus there's the obligatory over-sized digital clock and alarm display. Asus has also included its own finger-friendly launcher software that allows you to initiate, if not operate, many of the P320's applications and settings without recourse to the stylus, which is tucked away in a slot at the top left of the chassis.

The phone's physical controls work well. Under the screen on the front there's a clickable five-way thumb control - nothing fancy, but it does the job - and this is surrounded by a familiar-looking array of Windows Mobile smartphone buttons. Here you get Start, ok, pick-up and hang-up keys, plus a couple of hardware soft buttons atop the cluster. I liked the fact that the P320 has a proper lock and unlock switch on the side: it's much more effective and reliable than simply relying on the power button, which can easily be pressed by accident, or an on-screen method to lock the phone, as is the case with most other Windows Mobile devices
